Communications/Technology

1. Devotion Writing

Bethel prepares a Lenten and/or Advent devotional booklet. Members of the congregation are asked to write a devotion from a scripture.

2. Worship Filming Technician

Members of the Video Team film the 9 a.m. worship service for live streaming and publishing to the web. They also help create a DVD of the worship service which office staff use to make copies for those who are unable to attend in person or view online. We also video the 10:30 a.m. services when there is a baptism to provide a recording to the family.

3. Worship PowerPoint Operator 

Volunteers show the PowerPoint slides during worship services.  The slides are prepared by the office staff.

4. Worship PowerPoint Prep Assistant 

Assists staff in preparing PowerPoint slides for the upcoming services.  Templates and slide content are provided by staff.

5. Worship Sound Technician

Saturdays and Sundays there is a sound technician in the sound booths (regular services and Gate of Life) that makes sure all the microphones are working and that soloists, musicians and choirs have the appropriate microphones. Other sound opportunities may be available such as funerals, weddings, concerts, etc. Plan to be at the church ½ – 1 hour before the worship service to make sure the sound system is ready. A schedule is prepared every 3 months and usually, you are here 2 or 3 times during those 3 months.

Community Concern

1. Dorothy Day House

On the fourth Saturday of each month, Bethel asks for volunteers to bring a salad or casserole to the Dorothy Day House at 5 p.m. 2-3 servers are needed to serve the evening meal and clean-up afterwards.

2. Family Promise Rochester 

Volunteer with families and their children currently experiencing homelessness. Bethel provides volunteers to Family Promise Rochester four weeks a year at their shelter site, North Star House in NW Rochester.

Our volunteers choose from the following tasks: preparing an evening meal, a hot Saturday morning breakfast (drop it off at the house) or staying overnight.  Training is provided. There are many other short-term opportunities throughout the year.

3. Meals on Wheels

To deliver hot, nutritious, and delicious noon meals to the community, Monday through Friday. Pick up meals at designated location, deliver to individuals in the community, and return the coolers provided by Family Services. Volunteers give about one hour, one day per week (schedule provided). Can also be on a substitute list to fill in as needed for regular drivers.

4. Neighborhood Outreach

Neighborhood Outreach Team identifies opportunities to provide monetary, food, and household items for children, parents/families who are at risk or agencies that provide services for those not able to meet their daily needs. Requests for needs come from neighborhood schools, individuals, and agencies. Generous donations from members and community resources help to meet the ongoing needs. We look for collaboration and new opportunities to serve as many as we can. Monthly meetings, 2nd Tuesday in the Parenting Room or via Zoom.

5. Women’s Shelter

On the 2nd Friday of the month, Bethel provides casseroles (breakfast or dinner) for the clients of the Women’s Shelter, they need to be pre-cooked, microwave ready and in an aluminum foil pan. Casseroles are brought to the church office by 12-noon on the 2nd Friday of the month.

1. Adult Education Forum

Biblical subject presented by a speaker or video. Usually held September thru March on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in room 115.

c. Men’s Ministry

Bible Study is a chance for Bethel Men to engage in God’s Word and be changed by it together. The group participates in mission work projects. Fellowship is God’s gift of the joy of being together in Christ. When we gather, there is usually a spirit of hearty laughter and good natured conversation. We meet the 3rd Sunday of the month at 6 p.m., September thru May. Please join us!

Children, Youth & Family (CYF)

1. Confirmation Mentor 

Volunteers are needed as Mentors to our 9th grade students during the Mentor Ministry year. These adults that serve as mentors will have an opportunity to walk alongside a 9th grade student in their daily life as a Christian as well as have another person other than family that can support their growth in their faith.

Volunteers are needed to help facilitate monthly meetups or intentional contact with their 9th grade mentee, and focus on building a relationship with them. They also will be using different resources sent out by Kelsie Watkins, Director of High School Ministry, per month to help them with those meet-ups.

We begin the mentorship program with a meeting in September and you are responsible for being in contact intentionally one time per month until the student is Confirmed on Reformation Day of their 10th Grade year. Resources are provided in newsletters per month!

2. Confirmation Small Group Leader for Confirmation Students (grades 7-8) 

Volunteers are needed to lead small confirmation groups (5-6 students) on Wednesday evenings. Leaders will support Pastors by reviewing lessons and guiding students through Luther’s Catechism and Bible stories. They will also build relationships and encourage peer sharing through small group lessons and faith conversations. Leaders will facilitate small group time for about 30 minutes each week after the large group lesson. This is a 2-year commitment from September thru May each year. We are “off” any time school is off and we have a large break during Lent. It is a total of about 23 classes each year.

3. Forum 56 Class Leaders and Helpers for Sundays (grades 5-6)

Volunteers are needed to teach or assist with large group and small group lessons during class time. We meet on Sundays, September thru May following the school schedule closely for times off during the year. Flexible schedules for those that are interested in co-teaching. Held during 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services.

Our goal in Forum 56 is to strengthen Christian development and faith formation through age-appropriate large and small group experiences. We encourage and guide students to build a strong relationship with the Lord using various ways to pray and serve together.

4. High School Ministry (grades 9-12)

Volunteers will be asked to help in the leadership of special events like: ski trips, lock-ins, mission trips, milestone events, dodgeball tournaments, etc. These volunteers are crucial in providing a safe, fun, and favorable experience for the high school youth who attend these events.

5. Middle School Ministry (grades 6-8)

We bring our students together for special activities to give them an opportunity to Worship, serve and play together! This includes day trips and onsite events. Volunteers are needed to chaperone, adult presence, encourage youth participation and help with a meal or lesson. Training provided.

6. Sunday School Volunteer

Volunteers are needed as Teachers (use curriculum to plan lessons), Assistants (help the teacher in the classroom), and Superintendents (help teachers prep, attendance and offering). Background checks are conducted prior to working with children and every 3 years after that.  Flexible schedules for those interested I co-teaching.  Held during the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services September thru May.  Classes may be held in person or via Zoom.

7. Vacation Bible School

Volunteers include Station Leaders, Group Leaders, Crew Leaders and Decorating Team who provide leadership for VBS and share God’s love with our children. Leaders commit to VBS week (M-Th and includes time for set up and clean up), Station Leaders plan before VBS week using provided curriculum and lead one rotation for 4-5 groups. Group and Crew Leaders lead kids during VBS. Decorating Team works prior to VBS to create decorations to transform the church for VBS week.

Meets 4th Tuesday of the month, 5 p.m. in the Adult Library at Bethel or via Zoom. This team helps to plan and implement middle school and high school milestones events, fundraisers, service projects, and more.

1. Bethel Brass

Open to high school students through adults. This ensemble rehearses each Wednesday from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary and presents musical offerings and hymn accompaniments at least once a month throughout the church year. Trumpets, horns, trombones, baritones & tubas are encouraged to participate. If interested in this ensemble, please fill out the online form and contact Merle Savage at savage@bethellutheran.com.

2. Bethel Ensemble

Open to high-school students through adults. This ensemble meets each Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary and presents musical offerings and hymn accompaniments at least once a month throughout the church year. All abilities and instruments are welcome and encouraged to attend. Bethel Lutheran Church is also blessed with a few loaner instruments, so if you played in Junior/Senior high and don’t have your instrument anymore, you are welcome to borrow one of ours. 3. Bethel Ringers

For high-school students through adults. Rehearsals are each Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. This ensemble presents their musical offerings once a month at both the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services. It is not a requirement to read music to play in this ensemble and all are encouraged to participate. 4. Blessings

Open to all soprano and alto vocalists from high school to adult based on balance needed in the ensemble. This treble choir proclaims the Word of the Lord at least once a month, and rehearses every other Thursday from 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. in the chapel. 5. Cantori

Open to high school students through adults based on need for each section. This balanced ensemble was newly formed in 2018 and requires the same number of singers in each section, focusing on more advanced choral pieces in a chamber setting. Rehearsals are each Thursday from 6:15 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the chapel beginning in October. 6. Chancel Choir

For high-school students through adults. This ensemble meets each Wednesday from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Lifting up the Word of God through song is our calling, and we do this through many different styles of music. This ensemble offers their gift of music at both the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services regularly throughout the church year. 7. Cherub Choir

For youth ages 3 through kindergarten. This ensemble is a fun and educational way for children to learn music basics by singing, playing rhythm instruments and beginning choreography. Rehearsals are each Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in room 100. Selections are presented to the congregation at various times throughout the church year. 8. Choristers Choir

For youth in grades 1 through 5. This ensemble teaches youth to sing in unison and two parts. Rehearsals are each Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Selections are offered to the congregation once each month from October through May. 9. Gate of Life Worship Team

For high-school students through adults. This ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists leads worship at 10:10 a.m. in the Chapel each Sunday and rehearses prior to the beginning of the service in the chapel. 10. Jubilate Choir

For youth in grades 6 through 12. This ensemble elaborates on the Choristers Choir with 3-part and 4-part selections. Rehearsals are each Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the music room. Members learn and share timeless messages in song from scripture once a month in worship. 11. Sing For Joy

Open to all tenor, baritone & bass vocalists from high school to adult based on balance needed in the ensemble. This ensemble shares the Good News with the congregation at least once a month, and rehearses every other Thursday from 5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. in the chapel. 12. Solos, Duets, Trios, Quartets and Small Ensembles

There is always a need for musical offerings throughout the church year and people of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to share the Word of God through song at any time. Music is an amazing way to celebrate scripture and enhance any worship service! 1. Altar Guild

This team serves to support the many aspects of worship space. This includes tending to the altar furnishings, banners, vestments and paraments, robes and various other aspects of the “holy things” that accompany our worship services. The team will meet as needed but have shared responsibilities related to the seasons of the church year.

2. Communion Bread Bakers

A group that gets together to bake the gluten free communion bread for weekend services once or twice a month for a couple of hours. Meet in the church kitchen, located in Bethel Hall.

3. Communion Prep & Cleanup

Prepare the wine, bread and glasses for communion and clean up after service. Be a part of a group that helps at a Saturday night service or one of the Sunday services.

We need people who will help distribute the bread and the wine to congregants during the Saturday and Sunday services.

5. Greeter

Greeters are at the Saturday night service and each Sunday service in the Sanctuary along with ushers at the Gate of Life service in the Chapel to welcome people to worship. It is a great way to ensure that members and guests feel welcome at Bethel.

6. Lector (Reading scripture lessons in worship)

For regular weekend and special worship services. The Wednesday before, a copy of the reading will be sent to you for review.

7. Liturgical Arts

This team is an artistic group of creative people who want to enhance the seasons of the church year through visual arts in the sanctuary. The team will meet seasonally and share responsibilities as related to artistic decision for the space that enhance the worship experience of Bethel members.

8. Usher

Ushers needed for the Saturday night service and Sunday morning 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services and for special services during the year. You will be assigned to a team.

Service Ministries Within Bethel

1. Assist with Mailings

During the year there are mailings generated by the Bethel staff to be sent out to the congregation and we need help labelling, stuffing the envelopes and sealing them.

2. Coffee & A Prayer

Located on the front driveway of Bethel Lutheran on Wednesday mornings from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Volunteers wave to people as they drive by & hand out free coffee.

3. Coffee & Treats/Food Items

Bring coffee or food items for Sunday services, Gate of Life service or special events.

4. Drive Sunday Van

Van picks up members and friends who don’t have another way to get to and from 9 a.m. Sunday services at Bethel Lutheran Church.

5. Library Assistant on Sundays

Welcome patrons to either the children’s or adult library and help them check out/check in books or locate a particular book.

6. Nursery 

a. Help on Sundays

We offer a nursery for children (6 weeks – 3 years old) during the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services during the school year.

b. Help with Special Events

Sometimes the nursery is needed for special events. Volunteers are requested to help care for children during special events.

Nursery workers and volunteers are trained and follow CYF Safety and Security Policy. Background check are required for nursery workers and volunteers.

7. Office Volunteer

8. Parish Nurse Ministry

Volunteers help with various health-related activities at Bethel and may become a member of the Health Cabinet.

9. Phone Calling

We always need people who are willing to call Bethel members for Care Calling and Bethel updates for those who do not have email.

11. Read Bible Stories to Children

On certain Sundays during the school year, we ask volunteers to come in and read Bible stories to children. This is a month by month commitment and takes about 15 minutes at the beginning of the Sunday School hour.

12. Visually Impaired & Blind Ministry

Visually Impaired and Blind Ministry Group meets on the 4th Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in Bethel Hall. We enjoy a light meal, devotions, and fellowship. For many of our meetings we will have special music, or special guests!

5. Prayer Shawl Ministry

1. Young in Spirit Fellowship (age 55+)

This group meets monthly on the 3rd Thursday (not in June, July or August) for a luncheon and special program. All ages are invited to attend but this is especially suited for ages 55+.

5. Devotional Team

This team provides devotional materials throughout the year that are available on a cart in the narthex. They also prepare a Lenten and/or Advent booklet containing daily devotions written by members and friends of the congregation. 6. Drama Team

Since the early 1990’s, Bethel has invested time, money and much talent into drama – inside and outside of worship. Since our inception, we have felt that our “job” is to tell the wonderful story of God’s love to all who would listen. Those who have been involved over the years (actors, cast and crew) have grown spiritually and we devote our time and talents to this outreach ministry.  Meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month, 6 p.m. in the church office Conference Room.

7. Endowment Team

These are elected positions (at the Annual Meeting). The team meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month, 7 a.m. in the church office Conference Room or via Zoom. The Endowment Team provides fiduciary oversight of the Endowment fund and directs all operational aspects in support of Bethel’s mission and ministry.

Meets quarterly and as needed throughout the year.  They also perform the internal church audit every January.

10. Health Cabinet Team

The Bethel Health Cabinet promotes the health and wellness of the Bethel congregation and the surrounding community. It meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the church office Conference Room or via Zoom. Members of the Health Cabinet include Bethel members in health related fields and other interested individuals.

11. Personnel Team

Members of this team are elected at the Annual Meeting. The team meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month, 5 p.m. in the church office, Conference Room or via Zoom.

12. Properties Team

A group of individuals that meet once a month, usually at 8 a.m. in Room 115 at Bethel, to discuss maintenance, repairs and improvements of Bethel facilities & grounds.

13. Social Missions Team

Meet on the 1st Tuesday of the month, 6:00 p.m. in the church office Conference Room or via Zoom. This team works with local, national and international groups to help those in need (Food for Kidz, Minnesota FoodShare, ELCA benevolences, etc.)

14. Stewardship Team

Meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month, 4:45 p.m., in the church office Conference Room. We work toward more effective and efficient giving to the missions of the church. We hold a “thank you” pancake or a pizza breakfast for the congregation on Intent of Giving Weekend Saturday/Sunday and other events to encourage all our members to give, and share their time and talents.

15. Worship & Music Team

Meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in the church office Conference Room or via Zoom, no meetings June & July. Team primarily serves as an avenue of communication between various groups supporting worship (choirs/music, communion, usher, etc.)

16. Young in Spirit Board

This Fellowship Board meets as needed to plan future programs and menus.

17. Youth Ministry Team

We meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month, at 5 p.m. in the Adult Library at Bethel or via Zoom. This team helps to plan and implement middle school and high school milestones events, fundraisers, service projects, and more.

Bethel Women of the ELCA

1. Bethel Women

Participate in various activities throughout the year. Activities include, Rummage Sale, Bethel Tea and Monthly Missions.  The Women of Bethel have a board that meets quarterly, with various positions for service.

3. Representative for Growth & Outreach

Serves a 3 year term, attends council meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, 5:30 p.m. at Bethel or via Zoom. Works with Social Missions, Fellowship, Life & Growth and Bethel Women of the ELCA Teams.

4. Representative for Resources

Serves a 3 year term, attends council meetings on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, 5:30 p.m. at Bethel or via Zoom. Works with Endowment, Properties, Finance, Personnel and Stewardship Teams.
