1. Devotion Writing

Bethel prepares an Advent devotional booklet, as well as a Lenten or Pentecost booklet each year. These contain devotions written by members and friends of the congregation. Volunteers are recruited and offered a choice of Bible passages to base their devotions on. Devotions are then compiled and distributed as hard copies or daily via email. We welcome new writers!

2. Worship Filming Technician

Members of the Video Team film the 9 a.m. worship service for live streaming and publishing to the web.

3. Worship PowerPoint Operator

Volunteers show the PowerPoint slides during worship services. The slides are prepared by the communications staff and/or volunteers.

4. Worship PowerPoint Prep Assistant

Assists staff in preparing PowerPoint slides for the upcoming services.  Templates and slide content are provided by staff.

5. Worship Sound Technician

Saturdays and Sundays there is a sound technician in the sound booths (regular services and Gate of Life) that makes sure all the microphones are working and soloists, musicians and choirs have the appropriate microphones. Other sound opportunities may be available such as funerals, weddings, concerts, etc. Plan to be at the church ½ – 1 hour before the worship service to make sure the sound system is ready. A schedule is prepared every 3 months. Time commitment is flexible based on individual availability.

1. Family Promise Rochester 

Volunteer with families experiencing homelessness. Bethel works to provide volunteers to Family Promise at their shelter site, The Promise House, in SE Rochester. There are opportunities to volunteer with Life Skills classes, adopting a family for the Holidays, fostering pets of the families staying at the house, and helping families who are moving in/moving out. There is also always a need for donations. Gift cards to grocery stores are always welcomed as well as items purchased from their Target and Amazon wishlists found on their website.

2. Meals on Wheels

To deliver hot, nutritious, and delicious noon meals to the community, Monday through Friday. Pick up meals at designated location, deliver to individuals in the community, and return the coolers provided by Family Services. Volunteers give about one hour, one day per week (schedule provided). Can also be on a substitute list to fill in as needed for regular drivers.

3. Neighborhood Outreach

Based on building strong relationships within our congregation and immediate neighborhood, our Neighborhood Outreach Team identifies opportunities to provide monetary, food, and/or household items for children/youth, parents/families, and older adults who are at-risk for these items. We help support agencies who provide services for those not able to meet their daily needs. Requests from neighborhood schools, individuals, and agencies for these needs guide our missions as we receive generous donations from members and community resources to meet the ongoing needs. 

We succeed with developing solid collaborations within the congregation and our immediate neighborhood and strive to support as many opportunities as we can. Volunteers and new members are always welcome! Monthly meetings, 2nd Tuesday; 6:30 p.m. in the Parenting Room.

4. Women’s Shelter

On the 2nd Friday of the month, Bethel provides casseroles (breakfast or dinner) for the clients of the Women’s Shelter, they need to be pre-cooked, microwave ready and in an aluminum foil pan. Casseroles are brought to the church office by 12-noon on the 2nd Friday of the month.

Biblical subject presented by a speaker or video. Usually held September through March on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in Room 115.

c. Men’s Ministry

Bible Study is a chance for Bethel Men to engage in God’s Word and be changed by it together. The group participates in mission work projects. Fellowship is God’s gift of the joy of being together in Christ. When we gather, there is usually a spirit of hearty laughter and good natured conversation. Please join us! Meetings to be determined based upon group availability.

1. Sunday School Volunteer

Bethel offers a variety of options for Sunday School on Sunday mornings during the school year. Volunteers build relationships with students, lead or assist with activities related to the lesson. Materials and training are provided. Another way to help is assisting with preparation of supplies during the week for Sunday mornings.

2. Vacation Bible School (VBS)

Vacation Bible School is a high energy week in the summer of music, art, science projects, Bible stories, skits, games and more for kids in pre-school through 4th grade. Volunteers are needed to lead a small group of kids through the experiences, or you can lead a specific activity. We need many hands to set up, decorate and take down the vibrant decorations. Youth can start volunteering at 5th grade and adults of all ages are welcome.

3. Children’s Ministry Team

Children’s Ministry Team meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Team members provide a strategic plan for children’s ministry, share ideas, help plan and volunteer at events. We meet as a full CYF Volunteer Team then split into specific teams.

4. Leader for L.I.F.T. (Living in Faith Together)
Our Newly Named 5-6th Grade Ministry

Volunteers help 5th and 6th graders grow in faith while playing games, having meaningful discussions, serving, and applying bible stories to daily life. They meet weekly on Sunday mornings in the school year.

5. Youth Team member

Be part of a dynamic team, setting direction and planning middle and high school events, fundraisers, service projects, and more. This team meets on the 4th Tuesday of every month in Room 115 at Bethel or on Zoom.

6. Confirmation Small Group Leader Opportunity

Do you have a heart for guiding young people in their faith journey? Each school year, we offer Confirmation instruction for 7th and 8th graders on Wednesday nights. Large group lessons are led by pastors and youth directors, helping students grow in their understanding of faith in Christ. Following these sessions, youth break into small groups where adult Small Group Leaders play a key role.

As a Small Group Leader, you’ll:
-Build relationships with 5–6 students
-Facilitate discussion and reflection on weekly topics
-Help create a safe and welcoming community for youth

7. High School Youth Ministry, “Elevate” (grades 9-12)

We are looking for volunteers who enjoy working with youth, building meaningful relationships and helping to lead special events such as lock-ins, mission trips, service projects, fundraising events and more.

1. Bethel Brass | High School Students – Adults:

This ensemble rehearses each Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. in the sanctuary and presents musical offerings and hymn accompaniments at least once a month throughout the church year. Trumpets, horns, trombones, baritones & tubas are encouraged to participate. 2. Bethel Ensemble | High School Students – Adults:

This ensemble meets each Wednesday from 6:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary and presents musical offerings and hymn accompaniments at least once a month throughout the church year. All abilities and instruments are welcome and encouraged to attend. Bethel Lutheran Church is also blessed with a few loaner instruments, so if you played in Junior/Senior high and don’t have your instrument anymore, you are welcome to borrow one of ours. 3. Bethel Ringers | High School Students – Adults:

Rehearsals are each Thursday from 7:15 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. This ensemble presents their musical offerings once a month at both the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services. It is not a requirement to read music to play in this ensemble and all are encouraged to participate. 4. Blessings | High School Students – Adults:

Open to all soprano and alto vocalists from high school to adult based on balance needed in the ensemble. This treble choir proclaims the Word of the Lord at least once a month and rehearses each Thursday from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the chapel. 5. Chancel Choir | High School Students – Adults:

This ensemble meets each Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Lifting up the Word of God through song is our calling, and we do this through many different styles of music. This ensemble offers their gift of music at both the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services regularly throughout the church year. 6. Chapel Ringers |  Third Grade Students - Adults:

This is a new bell ensemble designed for the beginning ringer. Note reading and ringing techniques will be taught to all participants and this ensemble will ring as members feel comfortable with each musical selection. A minimum of 10 players are required for this ensemble, all are encouraged to give it a try! 7. Cherub Choir | Ages 3 through Kindergarten:

This ensemble is a fun and educational way for children to learn music basics by singing, playing rhythm instruments and beginning choreography. Rehearsals are each Wednesday from 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. in room 100. Selections are presented to the congregation at various times throughout the church year. 8. Choristers Choir | Grades 1 – 5:

This ensemble teaches youth to sing in unison and two parts. Rehearsals are each Wednesday from 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. in the Chapel. Selections are offered to the congregation once each month from October through May. 9. Gate of Life Worship Team

For high-school students through adults. This ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists leads worship at 10:10 a.m. in the Chapel each Sunday and rehearses prior to the beginning of the service in the chapel. 10. Sing for Joy | High School Students – Adults:

Open to all tenor, baritone & bass vocalists from high school to adult based on balance needed in the ensemble. This ensemble shares the Good News with the congregation at least once a month, and rehearses each Thursday from 5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. in the chapel. 11. Solos, Duets, Trios, Quartets and Small Ensembles:

There is always a need for musical offerings throughout the church year and people of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to share the Word of God through song at any time. Music is an amazing way to celebrate scripture and enhance any worship service! 12. Youth Orffestra | Grades 2nd through 6th

This is a new ensemble that will allow youth to experience rhythmic and percussion instruments. Orff instruments are small xylophones, glockenspiels and vibraphones with removable bars (notes) to allow for youth to focus on specific notes and rhythms while learning new melodic patterns. Rehearsals are each Wednesday from 6:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in room 100. Selections are presented to the congregation at various times throughout the church year. 1. Altar Guild

This team serves to support the many aspects of worship space. This includes tending to the altar furnishings, banners, vestments and paraments, robes and various other aspects of the “holy things” that accompany our worship services. The team will meet as needed but have shared responsibilities related to the seasons of the church year.

2. Communion Bread Bakers

A group that gets together to bake the gluten free communion bread for weekend services once or twice a month for a couple of hours. Meet in the church kitchen, located in Bethel Hall.

3. Communion Prep & Cleanup

Prepare the wine, bread and glasses for communion and clean up after service. Carry the flagon and distribute wine during the service. Be a part of a group that helps at a Saturday night service or one of the Sunday services.

4. Communion Server

We need people who will help distribute the bread and the wine to congregants during the Saturday and Sunday services.

5. Greeter

Greeters are at the Saturday night service and each Sunday service in the Sanctuary along with ushers at the Gate of Life service in the Chapel to welcome people to worship. It is a great way to ensure that members and guests feel welcome at Bethel.

6. Lector (Reading scripture lessons in worship)

For regular weekend and special worship services. Typically the copy of the reading will be sent via email to you by Thursday for you to review.

7. Liturgical Arts

This team is an artistic group of creative people who want to enhance the seasons of the church year through visual arts in the sanctuary. The team will meet seasonally and share responsibilities as related to artistic decision for the space that enhance the worship experience of Bethel members.

8. Usher

Ushers needed for the Saturday night service and Sunday morning 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services and for special services during the year. You will be assigned to a team for a service of your choice. Training and orientation is provided.

1. Assist with Mailings

During the year there are mailings generated by the Bethel staff to be sent out to the congregation and we need help labelling, stuffing the envelopes and sealing them.

2. Coffee & Treats/Food Items

Bring coffee or food items for Sunday services, Gate of Life service or special events. Watch for opportunities to volunteer on the Volunteer Opportunities insert, handed out with the Saturday or Sunday bulletin.

3. Drive Sunday Van

Van picks up members and friends who don’t have another way to get to and from 9 a.m. Sunday services at Bethel Lutheran Church.

4. Funeral Servers

Help serve meals in Bethel Hall after a funeral. Individuals needed to help setup, serve and cleanup after the meal.

5. Library Assistant on Sundays

Welcome patrons to either the children’s or adult library and help them check out/check in books or locate a particular book.

6. Nursery

Help on Sundays: We offer the nursery for children (6 weeks – 3 years old) during the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services during the school year when Sunday School is in session.

Help with Special Events: Sometimes the nursery is needed for special events. Volunteers are requested to help care for children during special events. 

Nursery staff and volunteers are trained and follow CYF Safety and Security Policy. Background checks are required for nursery workers and volunteers every 2 years.

7. Office Volunteer

Come in during the week to answer phones when the staff is not available. Training provided.

8. Parish Nurse Ministry

Volunteers help with various health-related activities at Bethel and may become a member of the Health Cabinet.

9. Phone Calling

Willing to call Bethel members to stay in touch or give Bethel updates to those who do not have email.

11. Sunday Morning Coffee Servers

We are looking for volunteers to help serve/donate coffee and cookies after 9am Sunday morning church service. This is a great opportunity to get involved and connect with others in our Church.

4. Friendly Quilters

Meet on Tuesday morning in Bethel Hall (lower level) from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

5. Prayer Shawl Ministry

Knitters and those who crochet make special prayer shawls to be given to people who need the love and prayers knit into the shawl. Instructions are available and yarn is provided. Meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the Adult Library/Commons Area at Bethel.

1. Young in Spirit Fellowship (age 55+)

This group meets monthly on the 4rd Thursday (not in June, July or August) for a luncheon and special program. All ages are invited to attend but this is especially suited for ages 55+.

2. Bethel Christmas Tea Team

Bethel’s Christmas Tea Team schedules an annual Christmas Tea each December for the purpose of raising funds for five community-based missions chosen by the Tea Team. Guests attending the Tea are treated to entertainment, Christmas lane vendors, and an afternoon Tea lunch served on beautiful tables decorated by volunteer hostesses.

5. CYF Volunteer Team

Meets in Room 115 on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. with option to join via Zoom. Team members provide a strategic plan for CYF ministry, share ideas, help plan, and volunteer at events. We meet as a full CYF Volunteer Team then split into specific teams: Children’s, Middle School, and High School.

6. Devotional Team

This team provides devotional materials throughout the year that are available on a cart in the narthex. Devotional books are free, but there is a slot for donations, if desired. Every year, they also prepare an Advent, as well as a Lenten or Pentecost, booklet containing daily devotions written by members and friends of the congregation. 7. Endowment Team

These are elected positions (at the Annual Meeting). The team meets the 4th Wednesday of the month, 7 a.m. in the church office, Conference Room or via Zoom. The Endowment Team provides fiduciary oversight of the Endowment fund, approves disbursement requests and directs all operational aspects in support of Bethel’s mission and ministry.

8. Fellowship Team

Helps serve cupcakes to the congregation during times of celebration for staff. Serving only a few times a year after church services on Saturday night or Sunday morning.

9. Finance Team

Meets quarterly and as needed throughout the year. They also perform the internal church audit every January.

10. Health Cabinet Team

The Bethel Health Cabinet promotes the health and wellness of the Bethel congregation and the surrounding community. It meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the church office, Conference Room, or via Zoom. Members of the Health Cabinet include Bethel members in health-related fields and other interested individuals.

11. Personnel Team

14. Stewardship Team

The team works toward more effective and efficient giving to the missions of the church. We hold a “thank you” pancake or a pizza breakfast for the congregation on Intent of Giving Weekend Saturday/Sunday and other events to encourage all our members to give, and share their time and talents. The Stewardship Team meets monthly at times agreeable to the team’s availability.

15. Worship & Music Team

Meets 3 times per year with meetings fitting the church calendar events at 5 p.m. in the church office, Conference Room. Team primarily serves as an avenue of communication between various groups supporting worship (choirs/music, communion, usher, lectoring, etc.)

Participate in various activities throughout the year. Activities include: Sunday Morning Coffee, Serve at Funerals, Rummage Sales (spring & fall), No-Bake/No-Craft sale and Monthly Missions supplying paper products and other items to various charities. The Women of Bethel have a board that meets quarterly, with various positions for service.
